BEND, Ore.- The Elks just wouldn't quit in the rubber match Sunday coming from behind four times to beat Cowlitz 8-7 in the 12th inning.
After Kyle Sandstrom (JR Sacramento State) scored Liam Ballance (SR Vancouver Island University) with an RBI foul out to the third baseman in the top of the 12th to make it 7-6 Cowlitz the Elks walked it off in the bottom of the inning with a two-run double.
The Black Bears (1-2) scored four unanswered runs from the fourth inning through the eighth to take a 4-2 lead. But with two outs in the bottom of the ninth a fielding error by the third baseman and a two run home run to left field sent the game to extra innings.
Cowlitz got the upper hand in the tenth with a throwing error by the first baseman and an RBI single by Jonathan Hodo (JR Benedictine). Bend (2-1) tied the game at five when they put two runners in scoring position. The next Bend batter hit a ground ball to short stop but the throw home was dropped by the catcher to bring in the tying run.
Tyler Parker (JR Clackamas College) put Cowlitz up again in the 11th driving a 3-0 pitch over the left field wall for the first home run of the season. The Elks doubled to lead off the bottom of the inning and three batters later an RBI infield single tied the game at six.
Joe Solomon (SO University of the Pacific) took the loss after coming in for the 12th.
Cowlitz will try to turn the page quickly back home at Story Field Monday night when the newest team in the West Coast League the Portland Pickles come to town. Ryan Kaser (SO Lower Columbia College) gets the start in game one beginning at 6:35 PM.
