Black Bears

Comeback falls short

LONGVIEW, Wash.- For the second game in a row the Portland Pickles jumped out to a sizeable lead against Cowlitz.

This time the Black Bears fought back from a 4-0 deficit to get to within one but the Pickles held on for a 4-3 victory to take the series.

Portland scored one run in the top of the second and fourth innings and two more in the fifth.

Cowlitz started their comeback in the seventh. Dutton Elske (JR University of Portland) led off with a single. Jonathan Hodo (JR Benedictine) and Zack Threlfall (SO Lower Columbia College) were hit by pitches to load the bases. Liam Ballance (SR Vancouver Island University) then hit a screamer to short stop to get the Bears in the game. The next batter Jimmy McLaughlin (JR Benedictine) hit an RBI sacrifice fly to right field to make it 4-2.

In the eighth Elske drew a one out walk. Threlfall drove him in for the second time with a comebacker into center field.

McLaughlin led off the ninth with a single to bring the tying run to the plate but Portland picked up the save.

The only reliever for Cowlitz Joey Morris (R-SO University of Portland) gave the Bears a chance at the comeback pitching 4.1 innings of shutout baseball. Morris only gave up three hits and struck out five Pickles. Starter Seth Rayburn (R-SR Tennessee-Martin) took the loss tossing the first 4.2 innings.

The Black Bears have lost four in a row heading into Wednesday's get away game. Jay Edwards (RHP JR Santa Ana College) will try and salvage one game against Portland. First pitch is at 6:35 PM.
