Black Bears

Epic comeback

LONGVIEW, Wash.- For six innings Sunday Kelowna starter Trevor Brigden kept the Black Bears bats quiet.

But once the bullpen arms started coming in Cowlitz came back from an 8-1 deficit to win their first series of the season 9-8.

Andres Sosa (JR Dallas Baptist) started the big rally in the bottom of the seventh reaching on a fielding error by the short stop which scored a run to make it 8-3. Then Austin Bell (R-JR Dallas Baptist) grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to plate another Bear.

If the seventh was big the eighth inning was gigantic as Cowlitz sent ten batters to the plate and scored five times to take the lead. The Bears loaded the bases with a walk, single and a fielding error by the first baseman. After Kelowna brought in a new reliever pinch hitter Andrew Walling (IN-FR Oregon State) was hit by a pitch to make it 8-5. Two batters later, with two outs, Sosa drew an RBI walk which dropped the deficit to two. After another pitching change Bell drew an RBI walk as well to bring the Bears within one. Yet another new arm came in but Blake Burton (JR Washington) hit a clutch two run single to give the Bears the lead. It was Burton's first hit this season in his 15th at bat.

Marty Maves (SR Benedictine) earned his first save of the season pitching a perfect ninth inning.

Christian Peters (JR University of Portland) earned his first victory of the season throwing a perfect seventh and eighth innings with two strikeouts.

Cowlitz (4-5) opened the scoring in the first inning thanks to a lead-off double by Ryan Kim (JR University of Portland) and an RBI single by Bell. But Kelowna (2-4) then went to work scoring three runs in the second, three runs in the fourth and two more runs in the sixth.

Dutton Elske (JR University of Portland) made it an 8-2 game in the sixth with an RBI ground out.

Kim finished a home run shy of the cycle after getting a triple in his second at bat and a single in his fourth at bat.

Cowlitz heads to Port Angeles Monday to take on the Lefties. First pitch is at 6:05 PM.
