Black Bears

Still coming up short

LONGVIEW, Wash.- Cowlitz couldn't get back in the win column in a non-league game Friday losing to Gresham 8-2.

The GreyWolves opened the scoring in the top of the first inning grounding into a 6-3-5 double play.

The Black Bears answered quickly in the bottom of the inning. Austin Bell (R-JR Dallas Baptist) led off with a walk. Two batters later Andres Sosa (JR San Jacinto College) tied the game with an RBI single.

But Gresham used a four run third to pull away for good. The GreyWolves sent ten batters to the plate en route to a 5-1 lead.

Cowlitz got a run back in the sixth. Jimmy McLaughlin (JR Benedictine) drew a two out walk. After a single by Liam Ballance (SR Vancouver Island University) Dalton Mitchell (R-SR Alabama A&M) trimmed the lead to 5-2 with an RBI single.

The GreyWolves got the four run lead back in the seventh with an RBI single.

The Black Bears had a golden opportunity to tie the game in the eighth. But with the bases loaded and no one out Cowlitz lined into a 1-5-3 triple play which ended the inning.

Gresham put the game out of reach scoring two more runs in the ninth on a bases loaded wild pitch and an RBI fielder's choice.

Starter Mitch Lines (SO Lower Columbia College) took the loss pitching just two innings and gave up five runs on six hits with one strikeout. Cowlitz used six relievers after Lines left the game.

The Black Bears are 2-1 in exhibition games this season. They beat the Northwest Honkers on opening night 9-0 and the Highline Bears 6-0.

Cowlitz has lost seven games in a row.

Gresham comes back to town Saturday for another 6:35 PM start time.
