LONGVIEW, Wash.- Cowlitz got back to having fun playing baseball Saturday and it showed on the field as they ended their seven game losing streak with a 5-0 victory over non-league opponent Gresham.
The Black Bears got on top early as Ryan Kim (JR University of Portland) led off the bottom of the first inning with a single. He then stole second base and advanced to third on the wild pitch. Two batters later Andres Sosa (JR San Jacinto College) brought Kim home with an RBI ground out to third base.
Kim then made it 3-0 in the third with a no doubt two run homer to right field. Isaac Deveaux (SO Utah) kept the dinger derby going in the sixth with a lead off bomb to left field.
Cowlitz drove in their fifth run in the eighth. Sosa led off drawing a walk. He then stole second and third. Two batters later Dutton Elske (JR University of Portland) hit an RBI grounder up the middle to put the game out of reach.
Five Black Bears pitchers combined for the shut out. Starter Travis Paynter (JR Hawaii Pacific) picked up the win pitching five innings and only gave up two hits with two strikeouts.
Wyatt Stanley (SO Edmonds College), Joe Solomon (SO University of the Pacific), Zach Denney (R-SR Tennessee-Martin) and Cody Turner (SO Chapman) each pitched one inning of relief. Stanley left the bases loaded in the sixth with a fly out to left field. Solomon stranded two runners in scoring position with back-to-back strikeouts. Lastly Denney and Turner pitched clean innings as Denney picked up one strikeout and Turner struck out the side in order.
Cowlitz is now 3-1 in exhibition games this season with the final two non-league games coming just after the All-Star break July 19th and 20th against the Northwest Honkers.
The Black Bears have a rare two days off before resuming West Coast League play Tuesday at the Yakima Valley Pippins. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM.
