PORTLAND, Ore.- Cowlitz gave up double digits for a franchise record third game in a row and lost game one to Portland 13-5.
The Pickles opened the scoring with a two run bottom of the second inning. With two outs the Portland batter hit a two run double to right center field.
Ryan Kim (JR University of Portland) evened the score in the top of the third. Kim drove a pitch over the right field wall for his first home run of the season and his sixth as a Black Bear.
But the Pickles got the lead back in a hurry in the bottom of the inning. A two run home run of Portland's own made it 4-2.
Four more runs came across in the fourth. An RBI sacrifice fly to center field, another two run homer to left field and an RBI single made it 8-2.
In the sixth a run scored from third on a botched pick off toss to first. Then the third two run homer of the game extended the lead to 11-2.
Cowlitz got back into the game in the seventh. Blake Burton (JR Washington) hit a two out two run single to trim the lead to 11-4.
Tanner Parker (JR Middle Tennessee State) brought home the final Black Bears run in the eighth with a two out RBI infield single.
Portland got the last laugh though as Zander Clarke hit his second two run homer of the game this time to dead center. The Pickles finished the night hitting four two run bombs which is the most home runs Cowlitz has given up this season.
Starter Matt Gannon (JR Northwestern) dropped his record to 0-3. Gannon only lasted 2.2 innings and gave up four runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Joey Morris (R-SO University of Portland) then pitched 1.1 innings and also gave up four runs, three earned, on four hits. Marty Maves (SR Benedictine) pitched the next two innings and gave up three runs, one earned, on three hits with one strikeout. Finally Joe Solomon (SO University of the Pacific) pitched the eighth and ninth and gave up two runs on three hits.
Portland (16-8) had 16 hits which was a new season high given up by Cowlitz (9-16). The Black Bears have given up 44 runs over the past three games.
