LONGVIEW, Wash.- Cowlitz avenged an extra innings loss to Bend from earlier in the season and won the series with a 3-2 ten inning game two victory.
The Black Bears trailed 2-1 going to the bottom of the ninth. Blake Burton (JR Washington) led off getting hit by a pitch. Tony Boetto (SO Santa Clara) then drew a full count walk. After both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch Dalton Mitchell (R-SR Alabama A&M) tied the game with an RBI ground out to short stop.
Jay Edwards (JR Santa Ana College) held serve retiring the Elks in order in the top of the tenth.
Mason De La Cruz (SO Washington State) drew a one out walk on a full count in the bottom of the inning. After Austin Bell (R-JR Dallas Baptist) reached base on catcher's interference Ryan Kim (JR University of Portland) became the hero hitting a chopper up the left field line to walk it off.
Edwards improved his record to 1-1 pitching 1.2 innings and only gave up one hit.
Cowlitz opened the scoring in the bottom of the third. Bell brought home De La Cruz all the way from first base with a two out single to right field. Bell took a big turn around first and a throwing error from the second baseman trying to pick him off rolled into the Elks dugout sending Bell to third.
Bend equaled the score in the fourth with a two out RBI double into the left field corner.
The Elks took the lead in the ninth. A bases loaded RBI single made it 2-1. Bend had a chance for more runs but an 8-5 double play ended the rally.
Cowlitz (2-0, 12-17) is now 2-2 in extra innings games this season. Bend (3-2, 10-22) lost their first extra innings game of the season to drop to 3-1 in that situation.
The Elks walked off the get away game at Vince Genna Stadium back on June 3rd in the 12th inning. The Black Bears had four chances to win the ballgame with a two run lead in the bottom of the ninth and one run leads in the tenth, 11th and 12th.
Cowlitz has only given up three runs against over their past five wins.
