LONGVIEW, Wash.- Cowlitz finished their non-West Coast League schedule Friday with a wild come from behind victory over the Northwest Honkers 7-6.
The Black Bears sent eight batters to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning and turned a 5-3 deficit into a 7-5 lead. Dalton Mitchell (R-SR Alabama A&M) tied the game at five with a two run triple. Mitchell then scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-5. Dutton Elske (JR University of Portland) hit what turned out to be a very important RBI single to give Cowlitz an insurance run.
The Honkers made things interesting in the top of the ninth. They got to within one run when a base runner stole third and scored on the throwing error from the catcher. The Honkers loaded the bases but Isaac Mullins (R-JR Washington State) induced a fly out to right field to earn a one out save.
The game was tied three times and there were four lead changes.
The Honkers opened the scoring with three consecutive two out singles in the first.
But Mitchell tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to left center.
The Black Bears took their first lead in the third. Austin Bell (R-JR Dallas Baptist) hit an RBI single and Andres Sosa (JR San Jacinto College) hit an RBI sacrifice fly to right field which gave Cowlitz a 3-1 lead.
The Honkers tied the game with one run in the fourth and fifth. They kept the momentum going in the sixth and seventh scoring one run again in each inning to take a 5-3 lead.
Mitchell finished the night 3-for-5 with three RBI, three runs scored and was a double shy of the cycle.
The Black Bears finished their exhibition schedule with a 5-1 record. Four of the five wins were shutouts.
Cowlitz gets back to West Coast League play Saturday at Walla Walla. It's the first game of the Black Bears only six game road trip this season. First pitch is at 6:35 PM.
