(Longview, WA) – The Cowlitz Black Bears tied the ballgame at 3-3 in the fifth, but a big five run ninth gave the visiting Bend Elks the 8-3 West Coast League win at David Story Field on Friday night. Each team managed six hits in the contest.

Bend plated first, scoring three in the second inning. With two on, first baseman Riley Tompkins (Seattle University, So.) smashed a three-run home run to right field. But the Black Bears scored three of their own in the bottom of the fifth to make it 3-3. First baseman Garrison McLagan (Mizzou, So.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and came around to score when second baseman Duncan Satherlie (UNLV, Fr.) tripled to center. An out later, Satherlie scored on a single to center off the bat of shortstop Michael Hoo (Cal Poly, Fr.). The Bears final run of the inning came off their second triple of the frame, this time from right fielder Jordan Fox (UC Irvine, So.), who smashed the ball into right center. Hoo scored on the play.

Cowlitz had a chance to go ahead in the seventh with bases loaded and two outs, but was not able to capitalize on its runners.

The Elks plated five runs in the top of the ninth and Adam Norton (Notre Dame, Fr.) put down the Black Bears in order in the bottom half to secure the 8-3 win.

Mark Garcia (UC Riverside, Fr.) (0-1) took the loss for the Black Bears in relief, allowing five earned runs off three hits and a walk, and struck out two in 0.2 innings. Joey Pulitano (Seattle U., Fr.) started, giving up three runs (two earned) off one hit and six walks, and struck out seven in 5.0 innings.

Bend’s Enoch Deaton (Houston-Tillotsen, Jr.) earned the win in relief, not giving up a run off one hit and a walk, and struck out one in 1.0 inning. Elks’ starter Jason Wilson (Chemeketa, So.) gave up all three black bears runs off five hits and two walks, and struck out two in 4.2 innings.

Third baseman Ethan Leiter (Yavapai CC, Fr.) led the Bears with a 2-for-4 night. Satherlie (1) and Fox (2) tripled. Hoo and left fielder Matt Russell (Cal Poly, Fr.) each singled to round out the Bears six hits.

Cowlitz and Bend return to David Story Field tomorrow for game two of this three-game set. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
