Matt Russell triples for Cowlitz

Tuesday, June 29

(Longview, Wash.) - The Cowlitz Black Bears tied the ballgame at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn’t hold on as the Portland Bucks scored one in the 10th to take the 5-4 non-league game at David Story Field on Tuesday evening.

After the Bucks scored one in the second off an RBI single from third baseman Cody Walton, they added another in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. But the Bears tied it up in the bottom of the frame, plating two of their own.

Bears third baseman Ethan Leiter (Yavapai CC, Fr.) singled and advanced to second on an error by Bucks shortstop Brent Graham. Leiter scored on shortstop Duncan Satherlie’s (UNLV, Fr.) double to right. Left fielder Matt Russell (Cal Poly, Fr.) drove in Satherlie with a triple to right, his first of the season.

In the fifth, Portland regained the lead, scoring two off singles from designated hitter Bailey Graham and right fielder AJ Royal.

Not to be outdone, Bears second baseman Jason Mahood (San Francisco, Rs.-Fr.) singled in Russell and Peirce Bily (UC Irvine, Fr.) to tie it at 4-4. Russell had walked and Bily was hit by a pitch to put runners on for Mahood.

The Bears and Bucks traded zeros in the eighth and ninth, but the Bucks struck in the tenth with an RBI double from first baseman Kyle Kirwan for the 5-4 advantage.

Nolan Clark (0-1) (UNLV, Fr.) took the loss for the Bears in relief, allowing one earned run off two hits in 2.0 innings, and struck out two. Starter, Jake Walsh (Mizzou, Fr.), allowed two earned runs off three hits in 4.0 innings, and added one strikeout. Jason Westerberg (Santa Clara, Rs.-So.) gave up two earned off five hits and struck out two in 2.0 innings. Mark Garcia (UC Riverside, Fr.) did not allow a hit or a run in 2.0 relief innings. No Black Bear hurler allowed a free pass in the contest.

Portland’s Kyle Cusick earned the win in relief, not allowing a run or a hit, but walked two in 1.1 innings. Starter Ryan Tarver gave up all four Bears runs (two earned) off seven hits and four walks, and struck out one in 7.2 innings.
