Kelowna jumped out to a 9-0 lead after two, scoring six in the first and three in the second off Bears’ starter Joey Pulitano (Seattle, Fr.) and Ben Dorman (Paradise Valley CC, So.) respectively.
Cowlitz started its comeback in the fifth with a three spot. With one out, center fielder Jamison Rowe (Nevada, Fr.) reached on an error by Falcons’ starter Sean Wardour. Shortstop Michael Hoo (Cal Poly, Fr.) singled to left to put two on for left fielder Stefan Sabol (Aliso Niguel High School), who drove them both in with a double to center. Sabol scored an out later on an error by second baseman Paul Politi on an Ethan Leiter (Yavapai CC, Fr.) ground ball.
The Falcons added two in the sixth on a two run home run by Jesse Sawyer to make it 11-3. But the Bears weren’t done, as they plated two in both the eighth and ninth.
In the eighth, catcher Zach Tanida (Cal State Fullerton, Jr.) walked and moved to third on second baseman Duncan Satherlie’s (UNLV, Fr.) double to right. Both base runners came around to score on right fielder Matt Russell’s (Cal Poly, Fr.) double to right.
An inning later, the Bears started a two out rally with a walk to pinch hitter Ryan Sheeks (Concordia, Jr.). After a single from Leiter pushed Sheeks to second, first baseman Garrison McLagan (Missouri, So.) drove him in with a single to left. Leiter then scored on an error by Falcons’ shortstop Alex Allbritton.
Pulitano (1-2) took the loss, allowing six runs (three earned) off six hits in 0.2 innings. Dorman gave up three earned off four hits and a walk, and struck out two in 2.1 innings. Nolan Clark (UNLV, Fr.) allowed the Falcons’ final two earned runs off three hits and a walk, with one strike out in 3.0 innings pitched. Mark Garcia (UC Riverside, Fr.) threw 2.0 scoreless, walking one and striking out two.
Kelowna’s Wardour (2-1) earned the victory, giving up three runs (one earned) off six hits and a walk, and struck out five Bears in 5.0 innings.
Three Bears had two hits on the night, with Satherlie stroking two doubles and scoring a run. Sabol had a double and a single along with two RBI, and Hoo singled twice and scored a run. Russell doubled in two, while McLagan singled in one. Designated hitter Mike Turay doubled and Rowe, Leiter, and Tanida rounded out the Bears 12 hits with singles.
The final game of this three-game set is scheduled for 6:00 PM at Elks Stadium on Sunday. After a three games in Bellingham next week, Cowlitz returns home for a three-game WCL series against the Kitsap Blue Jackets. This is the first time the Blue Jackets have visited David Story Field.
