After a quick 3-game homestand, the Black Bears will hit the road once again to play Springfield for the first time of the season. The weekend series begins Friday at 6:35 p.m. Game 2, on Saturday, will also start at 6:35 and the series finale is slated for 1:05 on Sunday.
Last year, the Bears and Drifters split the 6-game season series going 3-3. It was the away team who won each of the series. Springfield finished the ‘22 season with a 17-37 record in last place in the South Division.
Cowlitz just finished a series against Portland. In game 1, Chris Brown had a 2-run, 2 out double, followed by an Eli Kennel RBI single. The Bears put up 3 runs in the 4th inning. They also had stellar pitching from Carter Gaston who tossed 5 scoreless with giving up just 1 hit. The series opener was 4-1 in favor of Cowlitz. Gaston said after the game that he would like more strikeouts, only having 2 K’s on the night. He also added that he wants to improve his velocity as well in his next few outings. Gaston, a Kelso native, mentioned that it is “a full-circle moment” for him getting to pitch for his hometown team. A team he recalls going to see many times when he was younger growing up in Cowlitz County.
In game 2, Grant Jay hit his second home run of the season, but the Pickles would take the game with a final score of 6-3. Game 3 is tonight (6/22) as the Black Bears try to win the rubber match.
