Sweets Take Opener, 4-2

A four run seventh inning catapulted the Walla Walla Sweets (11-14) to a 4-2 victory over the Cowlitz Black Bears (11-14) on Sunday night in game one of a three game series from Borleske Stadium.

The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning when the Black Bears took a 1-0 lead as Seaver Whalen scored from third after leading off the inning with a double.

Black Bears starter Colton Kreuger held the Sweets hitless into the sixth inning before back-to-back singles by Jared Gonzales and Sean Bouchard broke up the no-hitter. Kreuger induced a groundout to third to end the inning and preserve the 1-0 lead for the Black Bears.

With the score the same in the Sweets' half of the seventh, things unraveled quickly for the Black Bears.  The first three Sweets batters reached with hits, with a Kyle Nixon double knotting the score at 1-1.  Two batters later, Mikey Duarte hit his first home run of the season to give the Sweets a commanding 4-1 lead.

Brennan Salgado led off the eighth inning with a walk and later came home on a sacrifice fly from Whalen to get the Bears within two.

Jay Flaa closed things out for the Sweets, striking out a pair to secure the third straight win for Walla Walla, while Cowlitz has lost five in a row.

Cowlitz outhit the Sweets 8-6, led by Corey VanDomelen's two hits.
