The 2014 West Coast League All-Star rosters have been announced, and four Cowlitz Black Bears -- starting pitchers Shane Bieber (Santa Barbara) and Billy Sahlinger (U. of Portland), reliever Joe Reta (Oregon), and infielder Corey Van Domelen (Linfield) -- will be representing the WCL South and the Cowlitz Black Bears in a North vs. South matchup in this years' WCL Mid-Summer Classic.
Bieber has been virtually un-hittable throughout his first 4 starts. The starting pitcher from UC Santa Barbara currently leads the league with a 0.75 ERA, and began the season by throwing 20.2 straight scoreless innings. His masterful June 25 home outing against the Kitsap Blue Jackets earned him WCL Player of the Week honors.
Sahlinger was the Black Bears' opening day starter, beginning the season by holding the Medford scoreless in six innings, and he has continued to impress. The University of Portland right-hander currently ranks in the top ten in the League for ERA and wins with a 3-0 record with a 2.53 ERA, and has struck out 22 in 32 innings of work.
Reta has been stellar coming out the back end of the Black Bears bullpen and closing out games in crucial situations. The right hander from Orange Coast College will be heading to the University of Oregon in the fall, and has a 1.35 ERA in 12 appearances out of the bullpen, including 20 strikeouts. He is a perfect three for three on the season in save opportunities.
Van Domelen joined Sahlinger as a returning Black Bears performer, and the Linfield senior-to-be currently leads the team with a .339 batting average and with a .448 on base percentage. Defensively, Van Domelen has been rock solid, with a .976 fielding percentage getting starts at both shortstop and second base.
The home of the Klamath Falls Gems, Kiger Stadium, is the host site to this years 2014 West Coast League All-Star Game. The game will be held on Monday, July 21st.
