Black Bears

Winning streak

LONGVIEW, Wash.- Cowlitz carried the momentum from Wednesday night's victory over Portland into Friday and earned their first winning streak of the season beating Kelowna 6-2.

The Black Bears started five new players and most of them made an immediate impact. Austin Bell (R-JR Dallas Baptist) hit the first home run for Cowlitz at Story Field this season in the bottom of the first inning to make it 2-0.

Andres Sosa (JR Dallas Baptist) then hit a homer of his own to lead off the fifth. That dinger to left made it 6-1.

Starter Zach Heaton (R-FR Dallas Baptist) did well in his first appearance of the season pitching four innings. Heaton only gave up a solo home run in the third which was one of only three hits allowed while he struck out two Falcons.

The Black Bears (3-4) made it 4-0 in the second. Isaac Deveaux (SO University of Utah) led off with a triple to right center. The next batter Dalton Mitchell (R-SR Alabama A&M) hit an RBI to left field which brought home Deveaux. Mitchell ended up at third base after a fielding error on the play. The next batter Jonathan Hodo (JR Benedictine) hit an RBI single to make it a four spot.

Cowlitz got their four run cushion back in the fourth. Deveaux led off with a walk then stole second. When Mitchell tried to steal second Deveaux scored from third on a throwing error by the Falcon catcher.

Kelowna (1-3) made things a little more interesting in the eighth with a screaming ground ball to third base with the bases loaded. But Travis Paynter (JR Lower Columbia College) nailed down the victory in the ninth only allowing one hit with a pair of strikeouts.

Marty Maves (SR Benedictine) improved his record to 2-0 by pitching the fifth. Maves only hit and walked a batter along with one strikeout. Joey Morris (R-SO University of Portland) pitched the next three innings. Morris only allowed one run on four hits with two strikeouts.

The game was delayed in the middle of the sixth inning due to rain.

The Black Bears go for their first series win of the season Saturday at 6:35 PM. The reiging West Coast League Pitcher of the Week Mitch Lines (RHP SO Lower Columbia College) gets the start.
