The Black Bears will head back to Oregon this weekend, this time to play Corvallis. The Knights are currently in second place at 13-7. This is the last series of the first half in the 2023 WCL season.
Last year, the Bears and Knights only played each other in one series. Corvallis swept Cowlitz at home, although a couple of the games were decided by two runs or less.
The Black Bears just finished playing the Sweets for the final time this season. After beating the Sweets on the road (2-1) earlier in the season, Cowlitz showed up once again at home.
In game 1, Kelso native, Carter Gaston (University of Portland) picked up his 3rd win of the season tossing 5 innings while giving up just one earned run and only 3 hits. Kyle Ethridge came in for relief and threw an immaculate inning and faced the minimum through 2 frames. Matt Nelson threw two no hit innings after that seal the victory. The offense was rolling as well, putting up 7 runs in the series opener to win 7-1.
In game 2, the offense stayed hot. In the second inning, the Black Bears sent 12 men to the plate in the inning. They scored a season-high 8 runs in the second frame. The offense continued to bring runs in throughout the night. Cowlitz shattered their season-high in runs by 7 Wednesday night. Previously, 10 was the highest scoring game this year for the Bears in Walla Walla. They won 17-4 in game 2 to claim their first series win at home. Also the first time Cowlitz has won back-to-back series this season.
